Spring and summer 2019

9/3/2019

Comments

As the winter coppicing and scrub reduction comes to a close, it is time to consider the task programme for the coming months. To start, the Chalkhill Blue site on Stagbury field is in serious need of some attention to reduce the considerable amount of coarse grasses that threatens to engulf the butterfly's food plant - the low growing Horseshoe Vetch. We will shortly begin work on this important area by raking over the site to remove the 'thatch' of dead grass and then strimming the site to reduce the height of the vegetation, followed by a final rake-over to remove the cut vegetation.
Other tasks that will form. the major part of our spring and summer work are:
Vegetation control of the Banstead Wood orchards.
Vegetation control at the White-letter Hairstreak site in Banstead Wood.
Path maintenance throughout the woodland and grassland areas.
Walking the butterfly transect.
A census of the ant species present at the site and their distribution (the NBN Atlas lacks any ant records at all for the site!)
Wild flower surveys across suitable parts of the site.
We will also have our usual 'photographer's walks' around the site.

Frogs & Toads in Banstead Wood

8/3/2019

In what looks to be a bumper year for amorous amphibian activity, the many frogs spawning over a large part of Banstead Woods pond have now been joined by toads.

As a result of the recent high winds, today we were out removing a fallen tree from one of the main paths in Banstead Wood, as well as other potentially dangerous trees and overhanging branches.

Saving our Chalkhill Blues

7/3/2019

Comments

Yesterday we had a meeting with representatives of Butterfly Conservation and Reigate & Banstead Borough Council to discuss action to improve the area favoured by the Chalkhill Blue butterfly on Stagbury. This small rectangular site, a short way from Holly Lane car park, is the only place where this butterfly is found in our Local Nature Reserve. Our Chalkhill Blues rely on Horseshoe Vetch plants, which are slowly being overcome by a coarse grass species in this spot.

To reduce the threat to the butterflies, it was decided that the WoodChips would rake and strim the coarse grass from parts of the patch to help maintain and possibly increase the coverage of  Horseshoe Vetch. We'll be announcing details of this task shortly.

Historical note:  the soil type of this piece of ground is due to it being used to spread some of the chalky spoil resulting from the digging of a large tunnel into the hillside during WW2. A little while back, the WoodChips had to fence off an adjacent section of the tunnel area where subsidence had taken place.
