Highest numbers for years

9/7/2023

This week's transect was walked at midday Friday in full sunshine and with the temperature peaking at 29 degrees C.
This is week 14 of the counting season and along with 13 and 15, is the very peak of the butterfly season, depending upon the weather. With Friday's ideal conditions, Meadow Browns, Marbled Whites and Small/Essex Skippers were out in the highest numbers we have recorded for several years. Backing up these high numbers were butterflies from twelve less prolific species including the first Gatekeepers seen this year.
Count details:
298

232 Marbled White
  59 Small/Essex Skipper
  22 Ringlet
    9 Small Heath
