End of April transect

30/4/2019

Conditions were fair for today's transect and when the sun broke through the occasional cloud it brought out a good number of butterflies.
We, the regular transect walkers, made an executive decision to modify Bill Downey's prescribed route in and out of Fames Rough. The original route took us down the steepest of tracks to get to Fames Rough and to make matters worse it's thick with beech mast that's like ball-bearings under foot. We now take the slightly safer and easier 'middle' path in and out of Fames Rough. All other parts of the transect remain the same.
Today's other sightings included a Tiger Moth performing a double loop-the-loop and a barrel roll. This species is thought to have
originated from Biggin Hill.

Today's count comprised:
 36 Brimstone
 12 Green Hairstreak
   8 Orange Tip
   6 Holly Blue
   5 Dingy Skipper
   3 Peacock
   2 Speckled Wood
   2 Grizzled Skipper
   1 Comma
   1 Small Tortoiseshell

76 butterflies across 10 species.

Monday's transect

23/4/2019

The weather was fine and calm with a covering of high cloud and as Graham H and I headed out we thought the conditions were suitable for a high count. We chose this day as it looked to be the warmest of the week. Although we were slightly disappointed with lower numbers than for last week's transect, we were rewarded with a single Grizzled Skipper, found in Fames Rough.

Here are the details of what we counted:-
29 Brimstone
11 Orange Tip
  9  Green Hairstreak
  3  Peacock
  1  Holly Blue
  1  Speckled Wood
  1  Grizzled Skipper
  1  Small Tortoiseshell

56 Butterflies across 8 species.

We missed last week's walk (transect 2/26) because of unsuitable weather, but yesterday conditions were good even with a cool NE breeze. We were rewarded with a total of 62 butterflies from 6 species. Details as follows:-
 33 Brimstone
12 Peacock
6  Orange Tip
6  Green Hairstreak
4  Speckled Wood
1  Small Tortoiseshell

All recorded on BCT's website and my own annual figures chart.

First butterflies of our season

1/4/2019

Despite today's brilliant sunshine, there was a fresh wind which reduced the chances of seeing many butterflies on the transect, but there was some shelter in Fames Rough and Harholt, and in these two locations we saw :
1 Orange Tip
2 Brimstone
2 Comma
5 Peacock
and
1 more Comma in Section 11 (Stagbury Field)
These will be added to the
Butterfly Conservation (UKBMS) site as usual.
