Dens are a familiar sight in most woods. We've all seen them – logs piled into a tepee shape against a tree. However, as shown in these examples from Banstead Wood, the simple art of den building is getting more ambitious, thanks in part to a ready supply of construction materials. Originally these were neatly stacked piles of logs left by the WoodChips after coppicing. Now they have been re-imagined into a mini housing estate, bordered by our dead hedging. The builders may have been watching too many episodes of Grand Designs but they are certainly enthusiastic. Let's hope they don't start applying for planning permission!
We are a self-funded group of volunteers looking after our local countryside in Banstead Wood and Chipstead Valley. We extend a warm welcome to those who would like to help maintain this important green space for the benefit of everyone. Here you will find details of WoodChips weekly tasks and activities. Check back soon to see what we're up to!
